Overview

Cedar Falls Utilities is currently recruiting for a full-time Garage Technician to join our Maintenance Support Services - Transportation Department. This position performs skilled diagnostic and mechanical work involving maintenance, repair of automobiles, trucks, construction equipment, and aerial devices typically found within public utilities organizations as well as assists in managing CFU's current fleet of vehicles and equipment.

The Garage Technician works under general supervision of the Transportation Services Supervisor.

Compensation & Benefits

  • CFU offers on-the-job training and will enroll employees into a 6-step apprenticeship program, consisting of classroom and field training. 
  • Non-commission, straight hourly based pay structure.
  • Starting wage is based upon individual qualifications. Full position rate is $42.65/hour once a candidate can successfully perform the essential job functions.
  • Typical work schedule is Monday - Friday, 7:30am - 4:00pm. Must be willing to work occasional overtime when necessary and in the event of breakdowns of equipment or vehicles.

Responsibilities

  • Performs diagnosis, inspections, adjustments, repair and routine maintenance on all utility vehicles, equipment and tools, encompassing mechanical, hydraulic, electrical and air systems for gas, diesel and natural gas engines.

  • Ensures proper and safe operation of units as well as compliance with DOT rules and regulations. Follows safety procedures and precautions in the shop and when making repairs and adjustments to equipment on site.

  • Applicant must be able to fabricate special tools and equipment as required. May be required to repair or build speciality items for various project work from other departments of the utility.

  • Assists when needed in company/customer standby generator maintenance program.

  • Assists in keeping vehicle maintenance shop clean and organized.

  • Reads and understands operating, service and parts manuals, both digital and print. Keeps current with EPA and hazardous waste disposal laws. Keeps records on all jobs and repair work.

  • Must be able to accurately diagnose complex problems utilizing available resources and execute repairs both in-shop and at times on the job-site under considerable pressure.

  • Provides assistance to vehicle washers when needed. Performs miscellaneous duties as assigned.

  • Responsible for maintaining a positive work atmosphere by acting and communicating in a manner that promotes positive relations with customers, coworkers, and management.

Qualifications

Education:

  • Graduation from an accredited high school, along with graduation from a vocational school is desirable with specialized training in mechanics.

Experience:

  • A minimum of 3 years of experience as an auto technician, medium to heavy duty truck technician, construction, and/or agricultural equipment technician or utility fleet technician preferred.
  • Prior experience with pneumatic systems, hydraulic systems, and single phase 110/220v electrical preferred.

Certifications/Licenses:

  • Required to have a good driving record and valid Iowa Class A Commercial Drivers License (CDL) with air brake and tanker endorsements.
  • Forklift licensure and welding certification is preferred but not required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of: Mechanical knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair and maintenance computers and electronics and utility procedures as they apply to Vehicle Maintenance. Lifting and rigging, field service repairs, roadside assistance and light towing/recovery.
  • Ability to: Operate all CFU vehicles and equipment. Skilled in use of the tools and repair equipment, including electronic and computer diagnostic equipment, welding equipment to make the necessary repairs. Ability to read and interpret schematics and technical information. Ability to work both independently and in a team environment. Initiative and resourcefulness in handling vehicle repairs. Keep abreast of current vehicle changes through educational resources. Work through team leader or directly with end users. Establish and maintain cooperative work relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Physical Tasks and Environmental Conditions:

  • The physical demands described here are characteristic of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job. The employee must occasionally lift at least 50 pounds, be alert to ergonomic hazards and possess the capability to work in difficult/awkward positions. May work in unpleasant or challenging weather conditions at times if required. This job requires a moderate activity level.

This position requires a hearing exam and a pulmonary lung function test, which is required for respirator use.

Pre-employment drug screen and physical is required.
