Overview

Cedar Falls Utilities is currently recruiting for a full-time Credit Services Specialist to join our Customer Service department. This position reviews delinquent residential and commercial accounts providing payment options and payment arrangements to avoid disconnection for nonpayment.

The Credit Services Specialist works under general supervision of the Customer Service Manager.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Full-time, Non-Exempt Hourly position.
  • Starting wage is based upon individual qualifications. $25.29/Hour - $34.69/Hour.
  • Typical work schedule is Monday - Friday, 8:00am - 5:00pm with an hour lunch. Must be willing to work occasional shift until 5:00pm.

Responsibilities

  • Monitors residential and commercial accounts for delinquencies issuing proper notices for collection process. Works with customers on payment options prior to disconnection.

  • Contacts and corresponds with customers to collect on delinquent debt and avoid the account being sent to a third party collection agency. Provides consultation by explaining available options, referring customers to agencies for assistance, making payment arrangements, giving extensions, or offering formal payment agreements.

  • Prepares and monitors payment agreements. Works all aspects of the call/post process, including call list and generation of all related notices and reports. Assists in ensuring proper documentation on disconnects is in compliance with state and federal laws.

  • Prepares necessary paperwork and contact information for disconnects and reconnects. Determine with supervisor approval which services get disconnected when required.

  • Serves as point of contact with third party collection agency by preparing account information, reporting incoming and outgoing payments and verification of debts.

  • Administers the State Offset Program to recover delinquent debt owed to CFU via customers’ Iowa State tax refunds.

  • Assists with providing backup support with NSF payment returns, call/post list and reconnecting customers’ services as needed. Assists with bankruptcy filings and probate filings. Assists with the Energy Assistance payments. Assists in other areas as needed and maintains accurate records in accordance with state and federal guidelines.

  • Responsible for maintaining a positive work atmosphere by acting and communicating in a manner that promotes positive relations with customers, coworkers, and management.

Qualifications

Education:

  • Associates degree in business, general studies, or related field.

Experience:

  • 4 years general credit and customer service experience with 2 years of CFU experience preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of: Thorough knowledge of Cedar Falls Utilities products, billing practices, and credit policies. Iowa Utility Commission Regulations. Critical thinking and problem solving skills, computer software applications, and customer service skills.

  • Ability to: Interpret company credit policies and IUC regulations and apply knowledge to customer situations. Effectively deal with upset customers. Utilize critical thinking and problem solving techniques when dealing with customer bill accounts. Carry out work assignments as instructed. Utilize computer databases and software. Maintain accurate records. Establish and maintain cooperative work relationships with those contacted throughout the course of work.  

Physical Tasks and Environmental Conditions:

  • The work involves sedentary to light work in an office setting. There is frequent need to stand, stoop, walk, sit, lift light objects (up to 10 pounds) and perform other similar actions during the course of the workday.
